Steps to forming a union

  • Finding a union that’s right for you is an important step. The Legal Professionals Union (LPU) and our parent union IFPTE have decades of experience representing legal professionals across every sector.

  • Forming an Organizing Commitee is one of the most important steps in the organizing process. This group will be the face of the union during the campaign, so you want your committee to be diverse and representative of your workforce.

  • Having organizing conversations through 1:1 talks and group meetings about what you want to accomplish by organizing, and why its important to take the step to forming a union NOW.

  • Official support for the union is shown by a signing a union membership card stating that you want to join ULP for the purposes of negotiation terms and conditions with your employer. Once a super majority of support is achieved, these cards will be presented to either the NLRB (the federal agency that deals with union elections) or to a neutral third party to be counted in the event of a voluntary recognition. These membership cards remain confidential from your employer.

  • With a super majority of support, we will ask the employer to do the right thing, forego an election, and voluntarily recognize the union. If they do not, we will be ready to promptly file for an election with the appropriate agency.

  • A bargaining team will be democratically elected from the membership, and priorities for negotiations will be established in coordination with the membership. When an agreement is reached, it will be put to the entire membership for a ratification vote.
